Episode #2 – What kind of roaming billing errors is Araxxe finding?
Episode #3 – Billing Error Case: Option allocation error for Data transactions in roaming
Episode #4 – How can Araxxe Help?
Through our global infrastructure, Araxxe can verify your customers billing and experience, identify issues that cannot be identified through existing reconciliation controls.
Araxxe can identify any issues no matter where your processes fail: Missing transactions, incorrectly metered transactions, incorrectly rated transactions, delayed or incorrect notifications etc.
Araxxe provides high definition’ billing verification, utilizing our worldwide infrastructure, we can quickly and efficiently highlight errors. This allows operators to narrow the 3% – 5% error tolerance allowed with their current reconciliation systems.
We propose a zero-error tolerance because we perform ‘per transaction’ checks and we do not use any aggregated data. We believe that “small” billing errors also count! One small billing error today can be a big one tomorrow! Ten small billing errors put together do have a big financial impact!

Episode #2 – What kind of roaming billing errors is Araxxe finding?
Episode #3 – Billing Error Case: Option allocation error for Data transactions in roaming
Episode #4 – How can Araxxe Help?
The case relates to a European mobile operator with 21 million subscribers. Their marketing team created a new option called ‘Move Everywhere’. This option is exclusively available to subscribers of one specific postpaid tariff plan. After activation of this new option, Araxxe conducted a test campaign and reported the following issue:
“Whilst Roaming in Bosnia, India and Japan, data transactions performed by Araxxe were invoiced 0€ instead of €12.50 per megabyte.”
Following an internal review, it was determined that the issue was related to an incorrect rating configuration associated with the new plan. Specifically, a data allowance applied whilst roaming in Europe had also been included within the ‘Rest of the World’ charging zone.
Assuming the error went unnoticed for twelve months, Araxxe analysts calculated a total avoided loss of €750,000.

Episode #4 – How can Araxxe Help?
This graph shows the top 10 billing error cases identified whilst roaming by Araxxe’s global testing in 2022.
Missing records are the biggest source of revenue loss associated to roaming traffic. Araxxe’s testing provides evidence of roaming partners who consistently fail to provide information required to bill customers.
Araxxe’s testing highlights many cases where the charges applied to customers do not match the published rates. This can lead to reduced usages (when published rates are too high) and customer complaints (when published rates are too low).
8% of billing errors found relate to incorrect bundle allowances, the issues frequently lead to revenue loss.
Billing errors result in revenue loss and reputational damage for telecoms providers.
Operating a worldwide testing infrastructure over the past 17 years, Araxxe has helped operators identify and prevent billing errors. Watch our feed over the next 4 weeks! We will provide you with insights into roaming billing errors and how we can help you to prevent them!
- Episode #1 – Mobile Roaming Revenues: What’s at stake?
1. Mobile Roaming Revenunes: What's at stake?
According to Kaleido Intelligence research, ‘total retail and wholesale roaming revenues from consumer and IoT mobile connections will exceed pre-COVID levels in 2023, reaching $30 billion and representing year-on-year growth of 40% over 2022.’
Kaleido also forecasts that roaming IoT connections will reach nearly 940 million in 2027, up from 297 million in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 22% between 2022 and 2027.
Due to billing complexity, errors occur more frequently when customers are roaming!

#2 – Data Billing: Beware of its complexity!
Since data has become a major revenue stream, it is important to ensure that subscribers receive the excellent customer experience and accurate billing whilst using the service.
Unfortunately, problems can occur at many steps:
Are subscriptions to data bundles applied correctly to customer accounts correctly and consistently via different channels?
Are the correct customer notifications about the status of plans and encouraging additional subscriptions delivered at the correct times?
Has the notification indicating the bundle depletion and encouraging customer to purchase additional data options been effectively received? Is the SMS content appropriate?
Are bundle price and bundle allowance correctly pro-rated according to business logic after cancellation request? Are data services barred, throttled correctly?
Telecom operators have almost all the same concerns when it comes to revenue leakage, Data transactions and bundles are taking a steadily increasing share of operators revenues…
Episode #1 - Mobile Data Revenues: What is at stake?
Episode #2 – Data Billing: Beware of its complexity!
Episode #3 – Business Cases Data bundle : what kind of billing errors is Araxxe finding?
Episode #4 –Conclusion : Don’t only look at the tip of the iceberg!
#1 - Mobile Data Revenues: What is at stake?
Many operators promote Data as their main service, rather than Voice or SMS. They continue to innovate, offering new plans and promotions to meet customer demands whilst increasing data usage and revenues.
The following graphs show the growth of data volumes by region:
Source: GSMA The Mobile Economy – p9 – 2021
https://www.gsma.com/mobileeconomy/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/GSMA_MobileEconomy2021_3.pdf
All of these changes increase the risk of billing errors, revenue loss and customer complaints.
Billing errors impact the revenues, customer experience and cause reputational damage for mobile operators. Whilst many operators think they are immune from this type of problem by offering subscribers bundles and unlimited usage, Araxxe testing has highlighted many issues with these plans. Uncharged data usage, incorrect bytes count, incorrect application of bundle fees, confusion between local, "Roam Like Home" and "Non Roam Like Home" zones, delayed application of throttling, missing customer notifications by SMS, bundle renewal process, and rollover errors to mention but a few.
Araxxe's new billing observatory helps operators understand the level of billing errors in different countries and regions around the world.
Our unique maps display Billing Error Rates (BER) of Data transactions performed in 339 networks in 117 countries over 5 continents. Maps are designed to help visualize where and how often problems occur. All Billing Error Rates are calculated according to the international Standard ETSI TS 102 845, ensuring that figures are reliable, comparable, and actionable.
All testing was carried out using Araxxe’s global network of resources.

Started in September 2019, the DETSI project (Detection of Scams by Artificial Intelligence) aims to protect European mobile subscribers from a set of telephone frauds.
This project was supported in a joint framework between the French government under the Future Investments Program, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region as well as the Pays de la Loire Region, but also BPI France, and three key telecom cybersecurity players: IMT Télécoms Paris (which is part of the leading French group of engineering schools), VIAVI (international leader in optical technologies and tests and measurements for telecommunications) as well as Araxxe (SME based in Lyon and a specialist in the market for billing verification and fight against interconnect fraud in international telecommunications).
The artificial intelligence systems and techniques resulting from this project will enable mobile operators to improve their protection mechanisms against these frauds.

#4 – Why use Anti-Whitelist Campaigns to Identify Bypass Fraud?
In countries with more sophisticated fraud operations we recommend our customers to deploy Anti-Whitelist (AWL) campaigns. This allows us to identify fraudulent SIM’s even when fraudsters use advanced techniques such as “whitelisting” to avoid detections.
In a recent contract with one of our customers we ran an AWL campaign alongside a standard campaign. Using AWL we were able to identify almost six times more fraudulent SIM and new bypass operations.
If you would like to learn more about our flexible, customized solutions please contact marketing@araxxe.com
Testing during the last quarter still shows high level of fraud, potentially due to the new fraudulent scheme called SMS Reselling App expanding throughout Europe
Would you like to know if A2P SMS fraud is happening on your network? Araxxe monitors A2P SMS traffic towards 280 operators in over 100+ countries on five continents. When fraud is happening, it’s on our radar!

#3 Business Case: Fraud is volatile!
International bypass fraud is a constant risk whenever there is an arbitrage opportunity between local retail rates and international termination rates. When high-volumes of SIM’s are blocked fraudsters can quickly re-establish themselves with new SIM and updated profiles.
Consistent monitoring via Araxxe test call program quickly identifies new situations and enables operators to take decisive action before new fraud scenarios become established.
If you would like to learn more about our flexible, customized solutions please contact marketing@araxxe.com
Many operators are updating plans and tariffs for customer roaming within the EU following Brexit. As roaming, billing and risk management professionals know, changes to roaming tariffs can be complex to implement and test. Errors generate media attentions and result in bad publicity which can damage an operator’s brand.
ARAXXE helps operators prepare for post Brexit rate changes
We have developed an efficient test campaign specifically designed to help operators validate post Brexit tariff changes.
Over a short period, we can run a “Health Check” to ensure the accuracy of your customer billing, covering different transaction types and plans whilst roaming in EU countries.
You will be notified as errors are identified so that corrective actions can be taken quickly before they impact your revenues. Our analysis is always carried out from a customer perspective. This allows us to highlight issues that may be missed by standard check and controls and it allows us to cover customer experience test scenarios as well.

About Araxxe
Araxxe is a pioneer and market leader in the use of test call generators to provide fraud and revenue assurance solutions to telecommunications operators around the world. Utilizing over seventeen years of experience and our global network of robots and telecom resources. Our testing infrastructure allows us to perform any transaction types (voice, data, sms) on many networks (3G, 4G, LTE, 5G).
#2 Combine analytics with an advanced test call program – the best way to prevent international bypass fraud
To prevent bypass fraudulent SIM being identified by usage profiles and analytics programs bypass operators have developed Human Behaviour Software (HBS). This makes fraudulent SIM’s difficult to distinguish from genuine subscribers. Combining your analytics tools with advance test call programs from Araxxe is the best way to identify these situations and minimize revenue losses.
If you would like to learn more about our flexible, customized solutions please contact marketing@araxxe.com
Over the next 4 weeks we would like to share some of the insights that we have gained over the years through a series of 4 facts and best practices:
#1 What is at stake? Voice interconnect bypass in top 4 of CFCA survey
#2 Combine analytics with an advanced test call program – the best way to prevent international bypass fraud
#3 Business Case: Fraud is volatile!
#4 Why use Anti-Whitelist Campaigns to Identify Bypass Fraud?
#1 What is at stake? Voice interconnect bypass in top 4 of CFCA survey
The 2021 Fraud Loss Survey published by The Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) reported telecommunications operators losing $40B to fraud.
One of the most significant fraud scenarios impacting operators is international bypass fraud (including Simbox Fraud) with losses estimated at $3.11B
Since 2005 Araxxe has supported operators around the world, helping them to identify and minimize this fraud and, in the process, preventing millions of dollars of loses. With our constantly evolving Test Call Generation (TCG) campaigns we stay ahead of fraudsters who are constantly developing new techniques to avoid detections.
